Suzhou experiences a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, though you'll find the transitions between them can be pretty dramatic. The city sits in the Yangtze River Delta, which means it gets a proper monsoon season in summer—June particularly stands out with over 8 inches of rainfall as the plum rains (meiyu) settle in. Winters are surprisingly chilly and damp given how far south the city is, with temperatures regularly dipping to around 2°C (35°F), though snowfall is rare. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are genuinely lovely, with March through May and September through November offering the most comfortable weather for exploring Suzhou's famous classical gardens. That said, summer can be brutally hot and humid—we're talking 33°C (91°F) with 70% humidity—while winter's dampness makes it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. The humidity stays consistently around 70% year-round, which is worth keeping in mind when planning what to pack.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
Suzhou isn't really a beach destination, but if you're looking to relax by water features in the gardens, late September through October offers warm but not oppressive temperatures around 23-26°C (74-83°F) with lower rainfall.
Cultural Exploration
March through May and September through November are ideal for wandering through classical gardens and ancient water towns, with comfortable temperatures in the 15-26°C (59-78°F) range and moderate rainfall that won't disrupt your plans too much.
Adventure & Hiking
April through May and October are your best bets for hiking nearby areas like Tianping Mountain, with pleasant temperatures around 20-26°C (69-78°F) and manageable rainfall before the summer monsoon or after autumn settles in.
Budget Travel
January through February and July through August see fewer tourists despite being less comfortable weather-wise, meaning better deals on accommodation—just be prepared for either cold dampness or sweltering heat and humidity.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

Compact umbrella
Rain can appear in any season, and the humidity means you'll appreciate having one handy year-round.
Comfortable walking shoes
Suzhou's gardens and water towns involve lots of walking on uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and stone bridges.
Portable phone charger
You'll be using your phone constantly for navigation, translation, and mobile payments which are essential in China.
Reusable water bottle
The humidity means you'll need to stay hydrated, and having your own bottle is more convenient than constantly buying water.
Daypack or crossbody bag
Essential for carrying your daily essentials while keeping your hands free for photos and exploring.
Hand sanitizer and tissues
Public restrooms might not always have soap or toilet paper, so carrying your own is wise.
Basic first aid supplies
Having band-aids, pain relievers, and stomach remedies saves time and stress when minor issues pop up.

Spring (Mar-May)

Clothing
Light layers like cardigans or light jackets, Long pants and comfortable trousers, Short-sleeve shirts and light blouses, One warmer layer for cooler evenings
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers with good grip for wet surfaces
Accessories
Sunglasses, Light scarf for temples, Small umbrella
Layering Tip
Spring weather can be unpredictable, so think in terms of layers you can easily add or remove as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Clothing
Lightweight, breathable cotton or linen clothing, Loose-fitting shorts and skirts, Moisture-wicking shirts, Light long-sleeve option for sun protection
Footwear
Breathable sandals or mesh sneakers that can handle occasional downpours
Accessories
Wide-brimmed hat or cap, Sunscreen, Cooling towel, Waterproof phone case
Layering Tip
Layering isn't really a concern in summer heat, but bring a light cardigan for over-air-conditioned restaurants and shops.

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Clothing
Medium-weight layers like sweaters and hoodies, Long pants and jeans, Long-sleeve shirts, Light jacket for November
Footwear
Closed-toe walking shoes or boots as it gets cooler
Accessories
Light scarf, Sunglasses, Small umbrella
Layering Tip
Early autumn can still be warm, so pack versatile pieces you can layer as temperatures drop through the season.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Clothing
Warm coat or down jacket, Thermal underlayers, Sweaters and fleeces, Warm pants or jeans
Footwear
Waterproof boots or shoes with good insulation
Accessories
Warm scarf, Gloves, Beanie or warm hat, Umbrella
Layering Tip
The damp cold penetrates, so focus on multiple thin layers rather than one bulky item, and don't underestimate how cold it feels.
Plug Type
Type A, C, and I (most commonly Type I with three flat pins)
Voltage
220V, 50Hz
Adapter Note
Most travelers will need an adapter unless coming from Australia or New Zealand; a universal adapter is your safest bet given the variety of outlets.
