Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
Cold and often grey. Highs rarely getting above 8°C (46°F) and overnight lows that can fall to around 1°C (35°F). Rainfall hits about 74mm (2.9 inches). Expect proper cold days rather than wet ones.
Still firmly winter. Temperatures barely budge from January. Highs sit around 10°C (50°F) and lows at 3°C (38°F). Rainfall drops to 66mm (2.6 inches). The city shows the first tentative hints of spring toward the month's end.
A genuine turning point. Highs climb to 15°C (59°F), and while lows still sit at 7°C (44°F), the days feel meaningfully warmer. Rainfall picks up to 86mm (3.4 inches), so expect a mix of clear spring days and overcast drizzle. Pack layers. A compact umbrella earns its weight.
Arguably the best single month. Visit Suzhou now. Highs reach 21°C (69°F) with lows at a comfortable 12°C (54°F). Rainfall hits 84mm (3.3 inches). The city's gardens are at or near their peak bloom. The crowds haven't quite reached summer levels yet.
Warm and increasingly humid. The city edges toward its plum rain period. Highs hit 26°C (78°F) and lows at 17°C (64°F). Mornings are pleasant. Afternoons turn sultry. Rainfall rises to 104mm (4.1 inches). The air carries that damp, expectant quality.
The plum rain season proper. This is Suzhou's wettest month by some distance. Around 211mm (8.3 inches) of rainfall arrives in long, grey stretches rather than dramatic downpours. Highs of 28°C (83°F) combined with that persistent moisture make this one of the less comfortable months for extended sightseeing. The waterlogged garden reflections are undeniably photogenic.
Peak summer and the hottest month, with highs hitting 33°C (91°F) and lows staying at 26°C (78°F). Nights bring little relief. Rainfall drops somewhat to 155mm (6.1 inches) compared to June. But the heat and humidity together are significant. Early mornings and evenings are the sensible times to be outdoors.
Nearly identical to July in feel. Highs at 32°C (90°F), lows at 26°C (78°F), and similar rainfall around 155mm (6.1 inches). This is peak domestic holiday season in China. Suzhou's gardens and canal streets are at their most crowded.
A welcome turn toward autumn. Highs ease back to 28°C (83°F) and lows falling to 21°C (71°F). Rainfall drops to 104mm (4.1 inches). The heavy, waterlogged feel of summer starts to lift. The city feels notably more navigable by the second half of the month.
October rivals April as the prime month. Highs hit 23°C (74°F), lows settle at 16°C (61°F), and rainfall drops to a modest 69mm (2.7 inches). The air clears. The light sharpens. Suzhou's gardens turn autumn gold. Crowds increase for Golden Week at the month's start, then thin out fast.
November cools fast. Highs reach 17°C (63°F), lows hover near 10°C (50°F). Rain stays light at 64mm (2.5 inches). The city quiets down. It feels more contemplative now. Come this month if you want Suzhou without the peak-season crush.
December turns cold again. Highs peak at 10°C (51°F), lows sink to 4°C (39°F). Annual rainfall bottoms out at roughly 48mm (1.9 inches), so days stay crisp and often clear. The gardens go skeletal. They look striking in winter light. You'll have most of them to yourself.
